The Kermadecs are a group of islands between New Zealand and Tonga that belong to New Zealand. They are biologically important with both subtropical and temperate plants and animals. The Kermadecs include a ten kilometer deep trench (the second deepest on earth) in a volcanically active area.
The DEEP Symposium was part of a campaign to protect this important part of New Zealand and highlighted the special geology and biology of the area. The protection of the Kermadecs is still being considered by the Government.
