New Zealand is blessed with a backcountry recreational network of over 950 huts that is unmatched anywhere in the world. Here are some photos of recent hiking in some of New Zealand’s magical places. Doris and I have tramped over much of New Zealand, including all the “Great Walks” except the Milford, but the best places are to be found away from the crowds! I’ve selected some of the more interesting recent trips.
I had great fortune to spend almost three months sleeping in a tent on the ice in Antarctica. That magical time contributed to a thesis on the growth of fish in southern McMurdo Sound, at that time the furthest south that fish growth had been studied. I was last in the Southern Ocean on the Our Far South voyage, organized by Gareth Morgan to raise New Zealanders’ awareness of the importance of the area between Foveaux Strait and the South Pole.
